1. Transfers

  • 1.1: How do I get to/from Koh Phra Thong?

  • Please refer to our transport pages for full information on to get to/from Koh Phra Thong. Please note:
    a) There's no public transport between Kuraburi town and Kuraburi pier or between Kuraburi pier and Koh Phra Thong, so taxis & longtail boats must be privately chartered.
    b) Taxi transfers must be booked in advance, as there is a very limited supply of taxis in Kuraburi.
    c) Boat transfers must be booked in advance, as longtail boats are based on Koh Phra Thong and only pick up from Kuraburi pier when pre-booked.

  • 1.2 Do I need to book my transfers to/from Koh Phra Thong in advance?

  • Yes, it is essential to book your transfers to/from Koh Phra Thong in advance. We recommend booking at least 2 weeks in advance to ensure availability at your preferred time. Please note:
    a) There's no public transport between Kuraburi town and Kuraburi pier or between Kuraburi pier and Koh Phra Thong, so taxis & longtail boats must be privately chartered.
    b) Taxi transfers must be booked in advance, as there is a very limited supply of taxis in Kuraburi.
    c) Boat transfers must be booked in advance, as longtail boats are based on Koh Phra Thong and only pick up from Kuraburi pier when pre-booked.

  • 1.3 From which pier do longtails go to/from Koh Phra Thong?

  • Longtail boats to Moken Eco depart from Kuraburi Greenview Pier. Longtail boats to all other resorts depart from Kuraburi pier. Please note: both these piers are different to Kuraburi's Surin National Park pier. We strongly recommend organising your taxi to Kuraburi pier through us, as all the drivers we use know which pier to go to and you will avoid getting lost. If you are driving yourself to Kuraburi pier, we will send you a map and GPS co-ordinates after you book.

  • 1.4 Is there any public transport between Kuraburi bus station & Kuraburi pier?

  • No, there is no public transport between Kuraburi bus station and Kuraburi pier – no bus, no songthaew, no tuk tuks, no taxis. Occasionally there may be a motorbike taxi floating about town but this cannot be guaranteed and is not practical with luggage. It is a 6km journey from Kuraburi town to Kuraburi pier, so a private taxi must be pre-booked in advance to transfer you from Kuraburi town to Kuraburi pier.

  • 1.5 Is there any public transport between Kuraburi pier & Koh Phra Thong?

  • No, there is no public ferry or longtail boat service between Kuraburi pier and Koh Phra Thong. There are also no longtail boats just waiting at Kuraburi pier, due to the relatively low volume of visitors to Koh Phra Thong. You must charter a longtail boat in advance.

  • 1.6 What time do boats go to/from Koh Phra Thong?

  • There is no fixed schedule for departures, as there is no public service between Kuraburi pier and Koh Phra Thong. All longtail boats must be chartered in advance. Longtail boats can be pre-booked for betwen the following times:
    From Kuraburi pier to Koh Phra Thong: 8am-4.30pm
    From Koh Phra Thong to Kuraburi pier: 7am-3.30pm

  • 1.7 What is the latest/earliest boat departure times?

  • Longtail boats can be pre-booked between the following times:
    From Kuraburi pier to Koh Phra Thong: 8am-4.30pm
    From Koh Phra Thong to Kuraburi pier: 7am-3.30pm
    If you cannot arrive at Kuraburi pier until after 4.30pm, you will need to spend the night in Kuraburi town and travel to Koh Phra Thong the following morning. We can arrange accommodation at Boon Piya Resort in Kuraburi town. If you need to leave Koh Phra Thong before 7am, you should leave the previous afternoon and spend the night in Kuraburi town. We can arrange accommodation at Boon Piya Resort in Kuraburi town and early morning taxis from there.

  • 1.8 How long does it take to get from Kuraburi pier to Koh Phra Thong?

  • The longtail boat journey from Kuraburi pier to Koh Phra Thong takes between 60 and 90 minutes through the mangroves.

  • 1.9 Can I transfer direct from Koh Kho Khao to Koh Phra Thong?

  • This route is not recommended, as the boat journey in open sea is long & subject to big waves. Instead it is advisable to return to the mainland, get a taxi to Kuraburi pier and charter a longtail boat from there to Koh Phra Thong. This boat journey is mainly in protected waters. If you still want to transfer by boat from Koh Kho Khao to Koh Phra Thong, this would have to be arranged via your hotel on Koh Kho Khao.

2. Accommodation

  • 2.1 What accommodation options are there on Koh Phra Thong?

  • Moken Eco is located in a prime beach location with beautiful seaview bungalows. It has 24hr solar-powered electricity. All room rates include American breakfast. Horizon is a mid-range accommodation option with a beach-front restaurant. Tawan has camping for budget-orientated travelers.   • 2.2 Can I book accommodation on Koh Phra Thong via this website?

  • You can book accommodation at Moken Eco via this website. Just submit an enquiry on the relevant resort page. We will respond by email regarding availability & payment of the deposit required to secure your booking.

  • 2.3 Do any accommodation options offer air con?

  • No, resorts on Koh Phra Thong do not have air conditioning, as there is no mains electricity on the island. Most resorts provide fans, except some of the budget options. The cooling sea breeze at beachfront resorts is very pleasant.

  • 2.4 Do any accommodation options have a swimming pool?

  • No, resorts on Koh Phra Thong do not have swimming pools, as there is no mains electricity on the island to run pool filters. It is safe to swim in the shallow bay in front of Moken Eco, Horizon and Golden Buddha resorts.

  • 2.5 If I want to support local Thais, which accommodation option should I choose?

  • To support local Thais, you can choose to stay at a resort owned & run by local Thais, such as Moken Eco, Tawan, Mr Choui & Rakkan. Golden Buddha & Horizon are both owned by Europeans.

  • 2.6 Are resorts on Koh Phra Thong open all year?

  • Mr Choui usually stays open all year. Other resorts are closed from May-October every year, as this is monsoon season when there are heavy rains & strong winds.

  • 2.7 When are resorts open on Koh Phra Thong

  • Most resorts are open from 1st November – 30th April. However, these opening dates may vary depending on the weather. Some resorts may open mid October-mid May.

3. Moken Eco

  • 3.1 When is Moken Eco open?

  • The resort is open between late October and early May. The resort is closed from mid May to mid October due to the harsh monsoon rains & winds which hit Koh Phra Thong during these months.

  • 3.2 Can we pay by credit card for our accommodation, meals and other extras by credit card?

  • The deposit required to book your accommodation & transfers can be paid by credit card via PayPal in your preferred currency, e.g. GBP, USD, Euros etc. There is a 10% service charge on the deposit amount only to cover PayPal fees, currency exchange rate losses and bank fees.

    The balance of your accommodation & transfers should be paid in Thai Baht cash upon check in. This cash must be brought from the mainland, as there are no ATMs on Koh Phra Thong.

    All extras such as meals, drinks & activities can be paid for by credit card via PayPal in Thai Baht. There is a 5% service charge to cover PayPal fees.

    Euros and US Dollars cash are also accepted. The exchange rate will be determined on the day, with 5% added onto the current mid-rate of exchange. Alternatively, extras can be paid for in Thai Baht cash by withdrawal from ATM in Kuraburi town after you stay with payment being made to staff on the mainland.

  • 3.3 Can we pay in foreign currency for our accommodation, meals and other extras?

  • Cash in Euros and US Dollars are accepted. The exchange rate will be determined on the day, with 5% added onto the current mid-rate of exchange.

  • 3.4 Do you have a safety deposit facility?

  • Each of the standard bungalows has its own safety deposit box. Guests staying in the budget bungalows can use the resort safe in the lobby. We recommend that guests only bring essential valuables such as money, credit cards & passports.

  • 3.5 Is breakfast included in the room rate?

  • Yes, American breakfast is included in the room rate. Lunch, dinner & drinks can be purchased in the beachfront restaurant.

  • 3.6 How much do meals cost?

  • The resort restaurant provides a wide range of food including local cuisine, western food and vegetarian choices. Food is prepared by an attentive chef who has more than 10 years cooking experience. You can be assured that you will enjoy tasty food and high-quality ingredients at reasonable prices.   • 3.7 What activities can we do at the resort?

  • You can enjoy swimming at the beach in front of the resort. You can kayak in the mangroves at high tide and in the bay around Koh Pling, where you can snorkel and enjoy a very peaceful beach. These activities are completely free of charge, including kayak & snorkel kit rental.

  • 3.8 What tours can we do from the resort?

  • There are several tours led by an experienced local guide. For example, Savanna Tour gives the opportunity to see the golden meadow circulated by mystic-shape trees and find deer, wild boars & several exotic birds.

    There is also Koh Khai snorkeling tour. Here you can explore large colonies of colorful sea fan and enjoy an unspoiled beach. Many more tours are available at the resort. All tours can be booked upon arrival.

  • 3.9 How much do activities & tours cost?

  • Kayak rental is free. Please see check out the activities so you can budget for other activities and tours:

  • We sell basic items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste & mosquito repellent in the lobby.

  • 3.11 Do you have free wifi?

  • Yes, there is free wifi in the restaurant.

  • All bungalows have solar panels providing 24 hour electricity to power fans and charge electrical appliances.

  • 3.13 Do you have hot water?

  • Hot water is available in the standard bungalows and 2 smaller bungalows. Only cold water is available in the new budget bungalows.

  • 3.14 What is the different between the standard bungalows, smaller bungalows and budget bungalows?

  • Standard bungalows in our original zone are located in a beach front location just a few steps to the sea. Some of these bungalows have a loft where you can enjoy peaceful nap or older children can sleep. Some have a larger room space. Every standard bungalow has a sofa bed in the balcony. All have 24 hour electricity and hot water powered by solar panels. They also have a safety deposit box.

    The 2 smaller bungalows are smaller than the standard bungalows. One is a double and one is a twin. They have an indirect sea view via pine trees. Both have 24 hour electricity and hot water powered by solar panels. They have a safety deposit box. The new budget bungalows are smaller and more basic. They are located about 80-100m from the beach. They have an indirect sea view via pine trees. They have 24 hour electricity but only cold water. There are no safety deposit boxes in these bungalows.

  • 3.15 Do you have baby cots or high chairs available?

  • Yes, baby cots and high chairs are available. Baby cots should be reserved at the time of booking to ensure availability.

  • 3.16 How much do you charge for longtail boat transfers?

  • The private longtail boat transfer costs 1,500Bt each way. This is the price per boat, not person.

    If you book via this website and stay 7-9 nights, you receive a free one way transfer.
    If you book via this website and stay 10+ nights, you receive free return transfers.
    Please note, all longtail boats must be booked in advance to ensure availability.

4. Horizon

  • 4.1 When is Horizon open?

  • The resort is open from November to April. The resort is closed from May to October due to the harsh monsoon rains & winds which hit Koh Phra Thong during these months.

  • 4.2 Can we pay by credit card for our accommodation, meals and other extras by credit card?

  • The deposit and balance payment required in advance to book your accommodation & transfers can be paid by credit card via PayPal in your preferred currency, e.g. GBP, USD, Euros etc. There is a 10% service charge on the deposit amount only to cover PayPal fees, currency exchange rate losses and bank fees.

    All extras such as meals, drinks & activities should be paid for in Thai Baht cash. Cash payments in major currencies such as Euros or Dollars are accepted but there is a 4% commission charge added to the exchange rate.

    Payments for extras can be paid for by credit card via PayPal in Thai Baht. There is a 5% service charge to cover PayPal fees.

  • 4.3 Do you have a safety deposit facility?

  • Generator electricity is provided in all bungalows from 6pm usually until midnight to power the fans in rooms and allow for charging of electrical equipment. We recommend you bring a torch for later in the night when the generator is off.

  • 4.12 Do you have hot water?

  • No, only cold water is available. Given the heat, a cold shower is refreshing in the late afternoon.

  • 4.13 What is the different between the standard bungalows and the family bungalows?

  • The standard bungalows have 1 room with twin beds or a double bed. There is not enough space for an additional single mattress for children, so these rooms suit couples or single travellers. There is an en-suite bathroom with toilet, shower & sink. The family bunaglows have 2 rooms, one with a double bed and one with twin beds. There is a shared en-suite bathroom with toilet, shower & sink. These bungalows are suitable for families with children.

  • 4.14 Do you have baby cots or high chairs available?

  • No, there are no baby cots or high chairs available.

  • 4.15 How much do you charge for longtail boat transfers?

  • The private longtail boat transfer costs 1,800Bt each way. This is the price per boat, not person. Please note, all longtail boats must be booked in advance to ensure availability.

5. Facilities

  • 5.1 Is there electricity on Koh Phra Thong?

  • There is no mains electricity on Koh Phra Thong. Most resorts have generators to provide electricity in the evenings for lighting, fans & charging electrical items. Golden Buddha's generator is switched on 24 hours a day; other resorts with generators usually switch these off during the day to avoid unnecessary noise. Moken Eco has 24 hour solar powered electricity in all its bungalows.

  • 5.2 Is there an ATM on Koh Phra Thong?

  • No, there is no ATM on Koh Phra Thong, as there is no mains electricity on the island. The nearest bank is in Kuraburi town on the mainland.

  • 5.3 Are there any shops on Koh Phra Thong?

  • There are no shops on the west coast of Koh Phra Thong where the resorts are located. There are a few small general stores in Tah Pae Yoi and Baan Lions on the east and north coasts selling basic Thai cooking produce.

    We recommend you bring any toiletries, pharmaceuticals or snacks that you may want during your stay with you from the mainland.

  • 5.4 Are there restaurants & bars on Koh Phra Thong?

  • Yes, most resorts have their own restaurant and bar. You are welcome to eat & drink at any restaurant or bar, regardless of where you are staying.

  • 5.5 Can I get laundry done on Koh Phra Thong?

  • Yes, most resorts offer a cold-water laundry service.

    6. Activities

  • 6.1 Can we dive at Koh Phra Thong?

  • Blue Guru's dive centre on is currently closed due to family reasons. There are no other dive centres based on Koh Phra Thong or in Kuraburi. So there is no local diving available at Koh Phra Thong.

    If you want to dive, Blue Guru can arrange liveaboard trips to Similan & Surin National Parks departing from Khao Lak before or after your stay on Koh Phra Thong. Please see Blue Guru's website for more info on all the dive trips offered

  • 6.2 Can we join a National Park dive trip from Koh Phra Thong?

  • Blue Guru's dive centre on is currently closed due to family reasons. There are no other dive centres based on Koh Phra Thong or in Kuraburi. So there are no National Park diving trips from Koh Phra Thong.

  • 6.3 Can we snorkel at Koh Phra Thong?

  • It is possible to snorkel around the 2 small islands in the bay at Koh Phra Thong near Moken Eco, Horizon & Golden Buddha resorts. It is about a 20 minutes swim from shore or you can rent kayaks from all these resorts to reach the local snorkel spot.

  • 6.4 Can we join a Surin Islands snorkeling trip from Koh Phra Thong?

  • We recommend that you join a Surin Islands snorkeling trip from Kuraburi before or after your stay on Koh Phra Thong (not during your stay).

    Speedboat pick up from Koh Phra Thong is unreliable due to the big waves that can affect the west coast of the island, so depending on the sea conditions on the day, you may not be able to join the trip. There is also a surcharge for speedboat pick up from Koh Phra Thong, which makes it cost prohibitive for many guests. Furthermore, due to the extra time involved in diverting via Koh Phra Thong, joining a trip direct from Koh Phra Thong means that you get 1 hour less in the National Park.

    If you only have the availability to join a Surin snorkeling trip during your stay on Koh Phra Thong, we would recommend getting longtail boat transfers to/from Kuraburi, so that you can be assured to join the trip, whatever the sea conditions, and you get to enjoy an extra hour in the National Park by going direct to/from Kuraburi.

  • 6.5 Is it safe to swim in the sea at Koh Phra Thong?

  • Yes, it is safe to swim in the bay near Moken Eco, Horizon & Golden Buddha resorts. The bay is protected from currents and relatively shallow, so is good for children too. Do beware of longtail boats coming into Golden Buddha and Horizon resorts though.

  • 6.6 Are kayaks available at Koh Phra Thong?

  • Yes, kayaks are available at Moken Eco, Horizon & Golden Buddha resorts. You can kayak through the mangroves up the klong (river) that forms at high tide between Horizon and Golden Buddha resorts. You can also kayak around the 2 small islands in the bay near Moken Eco, Horizon & Golden Buddha resorts. Kayaking in the klong, in the bay and around the 2 small islands (Koh Pling) is very easy & safe.

    We strongly advise that you do not kayak past the channel in between Koh Phra Thong and Koh Ra, as the current is extremely unpredictable here and even experienced boat drivers face difficulties navigating the sandbanks in adverse sea conditions. We also advise against snorkeling south of Hornbill Rocks, as the current can be strong along the coast heading down towards to the south of the island, making it difficult or even impossible to kayak back into the bay.

  • 6.7 What tours are available from Koh Phra Thong?

  • Yes, massages are available at Moken Eco, Tawan Bungalows, Mr Choui's & Golden Buddha. Prices vary depending on the resort. These can be booked upon arrival.

  • 6.10 Are yoga classes available on Koh Phra Thong?

  • Yes, yoga classes are available at Golden Buddha. These can be booked upon arrival and are open to non-residents too.

  • 6.11 Is elephant trekking available on Koh Phra Thong?

  • No, there are no elephants on Koh Phra Thong. From an ethical perspective, we would recommend avoiding elephant rides during your stay in Thailand so as not to support animal cruelty.

7. Medical

  • 7.1 Is there a hospital on Koh Phra Thong?

  • There is a small community hospital in Tah Pae Yoi on the opposite side of the island to where the resorts are located (30 minutes by truck). If you need to go to hospital, we would recommend going to back to the mainland. Kuraburi has a community hospital with 24 hour accident & emergency department (2 hours by longtail & taxi or ambulance). For serious conditions, there are international hospitals in Phuket (4 ½ hours by longtail & taxi or ambulance).

8. General

  • 8.1 When is the best time to visit Koh Phra Thong?

  • Most resorts are open on Koh Phra Thong from November-April, which is considered high season. Moken Eco is open from late October to early May but exact opening & closing dates will vary each year based on the weather.

    Mr Choui stays open all year.

    January-March typically offer the best weather with dry sunny days but this does vary season by season.
    May-October is monsoon season and is best avoided due to rough sea conditions, heavy rain & strong winds.
    Christmas/New Year period (20 Dec – 6 Jan), Chinese New Year (Jan/Feb), European half term holiday (Feb), Easter (Apr) and Songkran (13-15 Apr) are all busy times, so are best avoided if you have the flexibility to travel at other times.
